Wardrop On Quest for Gold List

Length:

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "

I got a note from the Ontario Amateur Softball Association pertaining to the Quest for Gold- Ontario Athlete Assistance Program.

Of note, Owen Sound pitcher Matt Wardrop was on the list of 15 players nominated for funding.

Truthfully, I didn't fully understand the concept, so I made a quick call to Wilfrid Laurier University and caught Matt Wardrop between classes.

In his words, softball players accumulate points based on their performance in any given year and at the end of the year, the top point getters are eligible for Quest for Gold Funding.

Make no mistake, the funding is welcomed by the amateur ball player who has to factor in travel, meals and a flexible work schedule in order to compete at the level Wardrop does.

The drawback for Wardrop in 2017 is that he's considered to be an " alternate " for funding, which means he'll need at least two other players on the list ahead of him not to apply to receive the funding.

As he says, ' who wouldn't fill out a form for Quest for Gold funding ? '

Regardless, while focusing on his studies at Laurier, Matt Wardrop is eager to pitch this summer, the highlight being a trip to Winnipeg for the Canada Summer Games, a trip that quite likely will be a little more expensive if he remains an alternate for Quest for Gold funding.

I'm Fred Wallace
