1975 International Bantam Silver Stick

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

I saw a note last week pointing out the annual International Silver Stick Tournament for Peewees and Bantams was being conducted at Port Huron, Michigan, the site of the tournament for endless decades.

As soon as I saw the note, I immediately thought of Dean Rutherford who spearheaded Crimestoppers of Grey-Bruce for such a long time.

When Dean and I were 14, we played Bantam Hockey. Dean played for the Bowmanville Toros and I played for the Midland Jr Civitans.

In January of 1975, the Toros and the Junior Civitans advanced to the semifinals of the Port Huron Bantam Silver Stick Tournament.

Unfortunately in our contest, the Sarnia Minor Bantams eliminated Midland 2-1.

Somewhat deflated, we went into the adjacent arena to catch the end of the Bowmanville-Forest semifinal.

The Toros and Forest were tied 2-2 and if my memory is correct, they played 6 overtime periods, almost ALL of it in the Forest end.

The Forest netminder was Rob Livingston and he singlehandedly kept his team in it until a guy named Gerard Morrison won it for Bowmanville with a bomb from the point.

It's crazy, but I remember that game as much as almost any other Minor Hockey game more than 40 years later.

And speaking of Crimestoppers and Hockey, the 25th annual golf tournament at Southampton Golf Club will be staged June 1st and feature BOTH Wendel Clark and Rick Vaive.

I'm Fred Wallace
