Citizen Steps Up To Help Light Bluewater Park

Wiarton | by John Divinski

Annonymous donation of $5K comes to fund lighting project turned down by councillors

Sometimes there is a benevolent benefactor.

Just ask South Bruce Peninsula councillors.

During recent budget discussions, a request for $5,000 from Mayor Janice Jackson to put in lights among some trees in Bluewater Park was turned down again.

However, an anonymous citizen heard about the cutback and donated $5,000 to get the lights installed.

Mayor Jackson says "The lights are going to go in the main trees that are lining the roadway down to the boatramp.  So that's the main road through the park and the big trees on either side are going to be lit with little white twinkle lights."

She says she's often disappointed that people traveling through to Tobermory don't realize that Wiarton is a waterfront town as well.

Jackson says it's possible the lights will bring attention to Colpoys Bay and be a draw for people traveling north on Burford Street.

Staff will be looking after the installation of the lighting and council has approved maintaining the lights going forward.

It's believed the new lighting will also provide additional safety to park users and deter vandalism or inappropriate behaviour.
