Bruce Power is supporting pedal power now, and the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF) is the benefactor.
On February 2nd, Bruce Power representives were on hand for a cheque presentation where $10,000 was handed over the Foundation's Gran Fondo biking event.
The family-friendly event is scheduled for August 19th.
With their donation, Bruce Power becomes a Platinum sponsor, along with RE/MAX Land Exchange which committed a similar amount last November.
Bruce Power Communications Manager John Peevers says the choice was a simple one.
He says, "Our employees have told us health care, hospitals and keeping hospitals open and thriving in the community is hugely important to them."
As it turns out, one of the Gran Fondo bike routes, will take riders past the nuclear facility.
There are four distances to choose from being the 30K, 70K, 110K and the 160K routes.
The SMHF hopes to raise $150,000 in the event to help finance the health needs at the Southampton and Owen Sound hospitals.
Foundation Chair Jim Barbour says they're thrilled with the community support there has been for the biking event.
Barbour says this is the first time they've taken on a Gran Fondo event and sponsors are stepping up to the plate.
He says there are well over 130 registrations to date, from all over North America.
Barbour suggests the real influx of participants will come in the Spring.
They're hoping for 1,500 to take part.
Besides Bruce Power and RE/MAX, three other groups have offered sponsorship as well.
Outlaw Brew Company of Southampton has come on as a Gold Sponsor and Laveer Engineering and Promation Nuclear have signed on as Silver sponsors.
