Road Realignment a Possibility

Port Elgin | by John Divinski

A $7 million dollar road alignment project could be in the works for Bruce Road 33.

A 7-million-dollar road alignment project could be in the works for Bruce Road 33, intersecting with the CAW Road or Bruce Road 25, and then connecting with a future Bruce Street extension and alignment in south Port Elgin.

Right now, the CAW road meets Bruce Road 33 at a T-bone intersection in front of the UNIFOR Family Education Centre and is considered a dangerous area for motorists.

Saugeen Shores Mayor and county councillor Mike Smith likes the plan, saying "Long term we're going to see the land in the south develop right out to County Road 25, so it really makes sense to extend Bruce Street and line it up with (County Road) 33."

Bruce County engineer Brian Knox says right now public comments are being welcomed as part of the environmental assessment for the alignment project.

Knox states, so far the comments coming from the landowners in affected areas has been generally positive.

He says the county and the town welcome comments from agencies, general public, landowners, and Aboriginal communities until February 6.

Based on comments received, the department anticipates presenting a recommended preferred solution at the February 15th Bruce County Transportation and Environmental Services Committee.

More information is available on the Bruce County website or you can view a hard copy at the county administration building in Walkerton or the town offices in Saugeen Shores.
