Huron County Farmers Request Tax Relief

Huron County | by Fadi Didi

Huron County Federation of Agriculture requests reduced tax ratio for future years.

The Huron County Federation of Agriculture is asking for tax relief from elected officials.

HCFA Executive Rob Vanden Hengel appeared at the latest meeting of county council to plead for a lower tax ratio on agricultural land.

Vanden Hengel argues those in rural areas do not receive the same level of service as those in towns and villages.

Numerous town councillors sympathized with the plea, but said little could be done to augment tax ratios for local farmers.

Councillor Bernie MacLellan says dwindling support from the province has forced counties and municipalities to shoulder the tax burden.

Councillor Tyler Hessel echoed the notion, saying taxes could only be reduced if critical services were taken away.

Several elected officials suggested the fight for lower tax rates needs to take place at the provincial level.

To learn more, county council has directed staff to report back on what advocacy routes could be taken to reduce tax ratios for farmers.
