Ontario Hockey League

Kitchener Rangers 5 Owen Sound Attack 1

Rangers 5 Attack 1

Joseph Garreffa had a goal & 3 points to lead the Rangers to the 5-1 victory in Owen Sound.

Kitchener roared out of the gate and grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first period outshooting Owen Sound 14-4 in the process.

The game was scoreless until the 11 minute mark when Greg Meireles swept home a puck in the crease on a Kitchener power play to open the scoring.

Just over 2 minutes later, Garreffa fired through a screen to make it 2-0 and then Garreffa team with Cole Carter on a terrific set up to Rickard Hugg to make it 3-0.

The Rangers were 2 for 5 on the power play and increased their lead to 4-0 when captain Connor Bunnaman scored. Rangers sniper Adam Mascherin started the play in the neutral zone, laddering back to Garreffa who gained territory in the Owen Sound end and fed Bunnaman.

With the 4-0 lead, Kitchener cruised to the victory employing a very balanced roster to win their second straight and increase their Midwest Division leading point total to 46.

The Attack had a 2 man advantage midway through the 3rd and just as the second minor expired, Markus Phillips drilled a shot by Luke Richardson to spoil the Kitchener shutout bid.

Any momentum Owen Sound had died 4 minutes later when Kitchener's Jack York blocked an attempted faceoff dump out and promptly blasted it by Attack netminder Olivier Lafreniere.

Lafreniere was making his 3rd straight start in goal for Owen Sound and the Attack have scored just 2 goals in those 3 outings.

The loss for Owen Sound was their 4th in a row and also their 9th straight loss against Midwest Division foes.

Technically, Owen Sound outshot the Rangers marking the 29th time in 33 games that the Attack have outshot the opposition but it's fair to say Kitchener was cruising by the time the Attack began to mount any offence.

The Rangers who have a record of 4 & 2 head to head with Owen Sound, have another divisional game on Friday night when they host the Erie Otters.

The Attack will face the Barrie Colts in a weekend home & home series to conclude 2017.

The opener is Saturday night in Owen Sound with the rematch Sunday night at Barrie ( 7 pm for Terry's Trailer Service-Kia of Owen Sound Bearadio on 560 CFOS )
