Battle of the Blades is coming back to Saugeen Shores.
If the inaugural event was any indication of just how supportive the Saugeen Shores Community is, then 2018's 2nd Annual Battle of the Blades Fundraiser should be just as amazing.
Janet Dawson, Skate Canada Member and coach in Saugeen Shores for more than 30 years, reflects back on just how successful last year's inaugural event was.
"We had all levels and all ages; there were local firefighters, we had former Winterhawks players there, we had a lot of younger hockey players, some of them skating with family members, some of them skating with friends, it was really enjoyable and a very good mix," says Dawson.
The first Battle of the Blades event in April of 2016 raised an estimated $15,000 with half of that money going toward locally based Liv-A-Little foundation in support of Cystinosis research.
Well this year, the charity of choice is Caitlyn Cobean's Community Crusaders, an group affiliated with the Tara Boom Houston Children's Foundation based in St. Thomas, Ontario.
The group helps families with critically ill children deal with the mundane things in life like paying the bills while during a very difficult time.
Rona cobean, who's daughter Caitlyn lost her battle with cancer back in 2008, says they've managed to help other families get through a tough time through donations and funds raised.
"It's a sort of pay it forward I guess for our family, to be able to do this kind of fundraising and pay it forward to any other families that unfortunately  have to go through something like that," says Cobean. "We've had one family we've helped already."
The 2nd Annual Battle of the Blades Fundraiser goes April 20th, 2018 at The Plex in Port Elgin.
Entry to the event is by donation.
All proceeds raised will be split evenly between the Saugeen Shores Skating club and charity of choice, Caitlyn Cobean's Community Crusaders.
