Goderich Awaits Word On Stalled Hotel Build

Goderich | by Peter Jackson

Mayor Kevin Morrison says contract extension could be given for build.

It's been two months since ground was broken, to start construction of a new hotel on the former Victoria Public School property in Goderich.

Since then, little seems to have happened on the Gibbons Street site.

Now Council has passed a motion for the town solicitor to contact the developer, to see if the builder wants a contract extension if there's no movement on the site by December 31st.

Mayor Kevin Morrison says under present conditions, the existing contract would expire on New Year's Eve if the exterior of the structure wasn't built by then.

Morrison says the move approved on Monday is intended to protect the town and ratepayers, if the project stalls for any length of time.

He says he doesn't foresee any problem, if the developer asks for a contract extension.

Construction on the four-storey, 60-room Comfort Inn Victoria Place hotel was to have started last spring, but experienced delays throughout the summer.
