Canadian rock icon Gord Downie, longtime front man of The Tragically Hip, has died at the age of 53.

The band released a statement on their website saying he quietly passed away with his family close by last night.

Downie had terminal brain cancer.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke to the media to say a few words of condolences.

With tears in his eyes, he praised Downie and the music he created as well as the impact he had on all Canadians.

He also said Gord was a close friend, and that he loved this country with everything he had.

Downie was a true Canadian, staying close to his roots and in recent month had spent time speaking out in support of our Indigenous people.
