The ICEtacular event at Goderich's Winterfest celebration is getting funding from the Town.
By a recorded vote of 6 to 1 this week, Council approved a grant of $7,500 to ICEtacular, with Councillor Jim Donnelly the lone holdout.
Donnelly believes such events should be self-sustaining, so that organizers wouldn't be asking for municipal help.
Mayor Kevin Morrison says a number of organizations come before Council for financial aid for events, while Councillor Trevor Bazinet says he supports event funding applications.
ICEtacular spokesperson Elizabeth Van den Broeck says the town needs to be more receptive to grant applications for community activities.
She points out that ICEtacular and Winterfest are put on by the downtown BIA, which is not a not-for-profit organization but wants to stage the event for the community.
Van den Broeck mentions that many key sponsors are reducing the amount they contribute to ICEtacular, partly because of the economy.
She says the BIA should not consider downsizing Winterfest and ICEtacular in the future, because it might make sponsor fundraising more difficult.
ICEtacular runs February 2nd, 4th and 5th.
