After going 0-and-3 to open the Provincial Junior Hockey League season, the Goderich Flyers have built a modest two-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory over the Caledon Golden Hawks.
The game at the Maitland Rec Centre Saturday is one of a number this season, that pit Pollock Division teams against clubs from the neighbouring Carruthers Division.
Flyers' head coach Chris Corbett says his team adjusted quickly to the physical approach employed by Caledon, and recovered from an early Hawks' goal scored by Sean Nottle.
Kasey Harrison and Cody Treble fed Chase Meurs on the power play with 8:42 left in the opening period.
That was followed by two Noah Nurse markers in two minutes and 20 seconds, to put Goderich ahead 3-2 after one period of play.
Corbett praises the effort Nurse has displayed through the first five games of the regular season, going scoreless in the first four prior to Saturday after scoring seven times in four pre-season contests.
Brad Watson, Meurs, Mitch Fischer and Braeden Duncan assisted on Nusrse's goals, which erased a 2-1 Caledon lead on a goal by Steve Luongo at 7:53 of the opening frame.
Behn Ware equalized for the Hawks at 2:46 of the second period, but Matt Bean's unassisted effort with 14:45 remaining in the middle period stood up as the game-winner.
Corbett singles out veteran goaltender Brandon Bean's work in holding off Caledon in the third period -- the Hawks poured 20 shots at Bean in the final frame and outshot Goderich 40 to 37.
There's not much rest for the Flyers, who travel to Mount Forest for a 2pm face-off Sunday -- they return to MRC to host Wingham Friday night at 7:30pm and Walkerton Saturday night.
It's also a busy weekend for Caledon, as they return home Sunday to host Alliston at Caledon East Arena at 7pm.
In Saturday's other PJHL play, Mount Forest absorbed their first loss of the season, 3-1 at Walkerton in the Pollock Division, while Trevor Donaldson led Kincardine with two goals in a 6-2 win at Huntsville in interlocking action.
In the PJHL Yeck Division, Max Bannon and Daniel Berek scored for Exeter, as the Hawks lost 6-2 to North Middlesex in Parkhill.
