The Owen Sound Attack is pleased to announce Head Coach Todd Gill has named Jacob Friend as the 22nd Captain in franchise history with Nick Suzuki and Jonah Gadjovich serving as his assistants.
The Attack will also employ a rotating assistant captain, with overage forward Ethan Szypula also donning an 'A' for Saturday night's Bruce Telecom Home Opener.
Entering his 3rd full season with the Attack, Friend has suited up in 105 career regular season games, contributing six goals and 27 assists while playing a variety of roles on Owen Sound's blueline.
Signed as a free agent by the Attack just prior to the start of the 2014-15 OHL season, Friend was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings at 202nd overall in the 7th round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
Friend's full-time assistants, Suzuki and Gadjovich, both heard their names called in this past summer's NHL Entry Draft, with Suzuki going 13th overall to the Vegas Golden Knights while Gadjovich was picked up by the Vancouver Canucks at 55th overall.
Suzuki, who finished 5th in OHL scoring last season with 96 points, was originally picked 14th by the Attack in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection. He is entering his 3rd year in the OHL and in 128 career games to date, the London, Ont. native has scored 65 times while adding 69 assists.
Gadjovich, who is beginning his 4th year of Ontario Hockey League play, was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection and has skated in 186 career regular season games for Owen Sound. His 46 goals last year was good for 3rd overall in the OHL, and over the course of his career in the league, the Whitby native has contributed 107 points to go along with 133 minutes in penalties.
Attack Head Coach Todd Gill said that the combination of character and skill are what made his choices to wear the letters stand out.
"They're all great players, number one, they're all great people, number two, and in the short time I've been here they've had a presence in the room. People want to follow them, and when they do talk people listen," he said.
Gill said Friend's character and the way he carries himself on and off the ice was a big reason for naming the overage defender as his captain for this season.
"He's not afraid to come in and speak his mind. You need communication and he is my communication to the room," Gill said, adding "He leads by example and puts the team first. All three of these guys do that and that will help lead the young guys along."
Friend and the Attack will open the 2017-18 Ontario Hockey League season on Saturday night against the Flint Firebirds at 7:30pm at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre. Puck drop for the Bruce Telecom Home Opener is set for 7:30pm and tickets are available at the MacVicar & McComb ReMax Attack Box Office, online at www.attackhockey.com
, or by calling 519-371-7452.
Fans are encouraged to attend the Home Opener Fan Fest, which will begin at 4:30pm just off the front parking lot of the Bayshore.
