Female found near wreckage pronounced dead, following Wednesday night crash north of Goderich.

One person is dead, following a plane crash north of Goderich.

First responders were called to the Goderich Airport Wednesday night, to reports of a small aircraft flying in distress.

OPP say a ground, air, and water search commenced immediately with the Trenton Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.

Reports say searchers found crash debris from a small airplane in Lake Huron at roughly 2:30 a.m. Thursday, a half kilometre from the shoreline west of the airport.

Police say a woman was found nearby in the water, and transported to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Crews are currently searching the area for the second occupant of the aircraft.

Officials with Goderich Town Hall say ramps at the town's harbour are closed until further notice.
