Hazardous Waste Day

Hanover/ Walketon | by Robyn Garvey

Officials in Hanover and Walkerton will be accepting household hazardous waste items.

Today is a great day for Hanover, Walkerton and residents across Bruce County to do a little Fall cleaning to rid their homes, basements and garages of household hazardous waste items.

Both Hanover and the County of Bruce are hosting Household Hazardous Waste Collection programs today. (Sat)

The Hanover program is open to all Hanover and Walkerton residents and is located in Hanover’s Industrial Park running from 10 am till 2 pm.

The Bruce County program is operating out of the Bruce County Highways Garage in Walkerton and is open to all Bruce County residents.

Hanover Councillor Peter Hambly strongly encourages residents to take advantage of this free program.

He says these household hazardous waste collection programs help divert dangerous toxins from the landfill site that could leak in to the environment.

Household hazardous waste materials include but are not limited to: paints, stains, batteries, household cleaners, pharmaceuticals, propane tanks, antifreeze, fluorescent lights, fire extinguishers, used oil, oil filters, fertilizers, pesticides, aerosols, solvents, fuel and pool chemicals.

Hambly says this provides residents with a chance to remove hazardous materials from the home and dispose of them in an environmentally safe manner.

Commercial, agricultural, and industrial waste will not be accepted.
