Keeping Walkerton’s Saugeen River pristine is the goal of the Saugeen River Cleanup this Saturday.
From 9 AM until noon, volunteers will be cleaning the river trail system along the Saugeen River from any refuse that was left behind over the long winter months.
Councillor Chris Oberle encourages able bodied residents who have the time to pitch in.
Volunteers will meet at the Fire Hall prior to the 9 AM start time and will return to the Fire Hall at noon to join in a complementary barbecue.
Oberle says the Walkerton Saugeen River attracts a lot of visitors and it's important to keep it in pristine shape.
The Walkerton River is a major tourist attraction for fishing and canoeing.
Oberle calls it a jewel that needs to be protected and preserved.
He says cleanup projects such as this one is all about community pride and good stewardship.
Garbage bags and gloves will be provided to volunteers.
The free barbecue following the clean up is being hosted by the Walkerton Fire Department.
The Walkerton Firefighters Association will be accepting donations towards the cost of slope rescue equipment.
