Naming Options for New Recreation Centre

Orillia | by Ian MacLennan

Councillor Cipolla says it's important for the public to participate in the process.

A small turnout for an open house where the City of Orillia is seeking suggestions for a name to the new recreation centre.

The open house took place last night (THU) at Orillia City Hall where they are not only looking to name the building but also some of the amenities inside the facility.

Councillor Ralph Cipolla says it is important for the public to participate in the naming of the rec centre.

He says this is an opportunity for the public to make it their own and hopes to come up with a name that is suitable for everyone.

Cipolla -- who is also Chair of the Recreational Advisory Committee -- says the names could be well-known citizens (like Gordon Lighfoot or Stephen Leacock) who have gone around the world and made Orillia famous.

He says they are also looking for suggestions that reflect the city's industrial heritage.

Cipolla says people can still participate in the naming of the rec centre by going to the City's website and fill out a survey.

He says residents can also direct their suggestions to their Councillors.
