The province has approved a carpentry pre-apprenticeship program at the Muskoka Campus of Georgian College.
The program, launching next month, aims to help more local residents gain the skills they need to start an apprenticeship.
Training will be provided at no cost to applicants.
The program is geared towards unemployed and underemployed residents of Muskoka, and participants will receive secondary training and exposure in the fields of welding, solar and plumbing.
Construction is the greatest employment sector in Muskoka, comprising 22 per cent of all businesses.
