The Goderich Flyers and Mitchell Hawks are on even terms in their best-of-seven Provincial Junior Hockey League Pollock Division opening round playoff series.
Mitchell took out their frustration on the Flyers in a 9-0 victory at the Maitland Rec Centre Tuesday, after Goderich opened the series with a 3-2 win in Mitchell last Saturday.
Despite an energetic start and a 1-0 deficit after one period the Flyers ran into heavy penalty trouble in the second and third, during which Mitchell scored five power play goals.
Referees Scott Walls and Matt Stirling assessed Goderich for 69 minutes in penalties out of the total 79 minutes called.
Derek Elliott led Mitchell with three goals while Chace Duckworth had two and Joe McCarthy, Blake Pickering, Jake Finlayson and Drew Gross each scored once.
Hawks' goaltender Wyatt Nicholson made 24 saves for the shutout, while Goderich netminders Nathan Watson and Branden Bean combined for 30 saves.
Despite the loss, Goderich head coach David Errington believes his players will stay with the Hawks throughout the rest of the series.
Errington says at least two key players are expected back in the Flyers' lineup for Game 3 Friday.
Forwards Noah Kuno and Marcel Fohkens were notable in their absence from Tuesday's Goderich lineup, but Errington praised the play of affiliated players Parker Gibbings and Will Thibeault.
Game 3 goes at the Mitchell and District Arena Friday night at 8:30pm, with Game 4 at MRC Saturday night at 7:30pm.
