Officer Cleared in Shooting of Dog

Collingwood | by Ian MacLennan

Police officer from Collingwood cleared in shooting death of a dog.

An OPP officer that shot and killed a dog in Collingwood has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

Simcoe-dot-com reports the family of the dog received a report from the Office of the Independent Police Review Director.

The father of Merrick's owner, David Williams, tells the newspaper the family rejects the report and is considering further action.

The dog was killed when police responded to a call from a resident about what a person thought was coyote on Seventh Street last October.

Video footage shot by a neighbour shows a police cruiser running over the dog several times before an officer leaves the car and shoots the animal.

Police said they only discovered the dog was a 21 year old shepherd mix after it was dead.
