Electricity has been restored to the City of Owen Sound after an earlier outage.

Hydro One says a transformer fire in the 1,500 block of 8th Avenue East, near Alexandra Community School caused the outage.

More than 5,200 customers in the City lost power at around 7:45 AM on Wednesday.

Hydro One Supervisor Joe O'Reilly says the problem stemmed from an insulator, which prevents electricity from flowing to the ground -- and it's not unusual.

He says when "you have as many poles and insulators as we have, sooner or later something lets go."

O'Reilly says the fire also knocked the neutral line down across 7th Avenue between 15th and 16th Street East.

At 9 AM on Wednesday, hydro crews had replaced the insulator and fixed the down hydro wire, returning power to the city.
