Bruce Telecom is working on a governance change.
Kincardine Mayor Anne Eadie says they have started a process to convert the current Bruce Telecom Municipal Services Board format to a Municipal Services Corporation.
Eadie says the change is needed so Bruce Telecom can compete more effectively in a highly competitive and changing market.
She says when the new structure is in place later this year, it will allow the utility board of directors to make some decisions that don't need to come to Kincardine council for final approval.
The mayor says it gives the company the speed it will need to make quick competitive changes when necessary and allows it to operate at arms length from council.
No date has been set, but a public meeting on the change will be held in the future.
The general public will be allowed to comment and ask questions.
Eadie says the dividend concept will continue under the new governance based on the results of the company in any given year.
The latest dividend to the municipality was $900,000.
Bruce Telecom is wholly owned by Kincardine and its taxpayers.
