The new Foodland grocers in Wiarton is officially open, and the owner says he may require additional staff for the busy Summer tourist season.
Gary Dillon tells Bayshore Broadcasting News 35 new employees have been hired for the Berford at Frank Street location and more may be needed by June.
He suggests as many as 125 people will be employed at the site.
Dillon's new 30,000-square foot Foodland has a focus on organic fruits and vegetables.
With the facility's modernized equipment and updated layout, Dillon says Bruce Peninsula residents will now have an enhanced shopping experience closer to home.
At the grand opening on Friday, many Wiarton customers admitted to buying groceries in Owen Sound instead of at their local supermarket.
Vivian MacDonald is from Wiarton -- and she's pleased with the new Foodland's updated appearance and healthy organic options.
If prices remain competitive, MacDonald says she'll continue to shop local.
Dillon, the owner, says the community and the Town of South Bruce Peninsula has been supportive of the new location.
Mayor, Janice Jackson, says Council is trying to enhance Wiarton's downtown and the new Foodland is an ideal "kick-off."
