Battle of Blades in Saugeen Shores

Saugeen Shores | by John Divinski

A spin-off of Battle of the Blades is taking place in Saugeen Shores in April.

Battle of the Blades is coming to Saugeen Shores.

It's not the program you may have seen on TV but will be even more fun, because it will involve local dignitaries and members of the Saugeen Shores Skating Club.

Event spokesperson Ken Rhyno says 15 pairings have registered for the April 1st competition.

Each program will be about two minutes long, choreographed either by the skater or one of the club coaches.

Rhyno says the presentation is set to music and will be judged.

He says the concept is very familiar for the figure skaters but for the hockey players, the discipline is a little different.

Just ask former Saugeen Shores Winterhawks defenceman Matt Turcotte who was on the ice practicing with his partner Brittany Sanderson recently.

Turcotte says it's tough keeping his feet moving the same as his partner's.

With tongue planted firmly in cheek, Turcotte says he know he's the municipality's best all-round athlete, so he thought he give figure skating a try.

Rhyno says it will be a moderately serious/fun competition.

By nature hockey players and figure skaters are competitive in their own fields and this event will be no different.

Battle of Blades will also be a fundraiser for the Liv-a-Little Foundation, in the fight against cystinosis.

The battle gets underway at 7PM on Friday, April 1st at the Plex.

Admission is by donation.
