The town of Wasaga Beach is going to hire six new firefighters.

Council had put hiring two firefighters in the 2016 budget, but at Tuesday's Committee of the Whole meeting, following a lengthy in camera session, Councillors decided to hire six new personnel.

Mayor Brian Smith says the hiring process will start right away so that Wasaga Beach firefighters no longer have to work alone which puts them in danger.

Smith adds this is a much better solution than the possibility of having to close down fire hall two to manage the staffing issue.

The mayor tells us the cost per year for the new firefighters will be around $720,000 and could mean a potential four per cent tax increase.

He adds council will have to find a way to pay for the extra staff, beyond the two firefighters already in the budget, for 2016.

Brian Smith says the money may have to come from reserves this year and then finding money for the six firefighters will go through the budget process for next year.
