Hockeyville Nominees Announced

Southampton | by John Divinski

Southampton Coliseum leads a list of nominees for the Nationwide contest.

Southampton has thrown its hat into the Kraft Hockeyville competition.

Saugeen Shores Community Services Department officially nominated the Southampton Coliseum.

Director Jayne Jagelewski says, mentioned in the nomination are primarily accessibility enhancements to the facility.

Jagelewski says the only way the Southampton Coliseum can stay in the running is to make sure the community shows its support however it can.

She says everyone is urged to post photos and messages on the issue, using the hashtag #khv_southamptoncoliseum

Jagelewski says they need at least 250 hashtags to get to the next two rounds which will involve public voting.

According to a town news release, "The nominations are judged on several factors by a panel of Kraft Hockeyville sponsors, and one of those important factors is community support."

The first part of voting happens March 13th and 14th, trying to get the Coliseum into the top 10 candidates.

That number will eventually be whittled down to the top two contenders and there will be a second voting period, March 20th and 21st.

A winner will be announced in April 2nd.

Southampton ward councillor Don Matheson says there are a lot of communities that have been nominated this year so the Southampton Coliseum needs a lot of continued support.

Matheson says anything is possible if people get behind the project and vote.

Kraft Hockeville offers a grand prize of $100,000 in arena upgrades, along with the opportunity to host an NHL pre-season hockey game.

Second prize is $100,000 in arena upgrades and $25,000 will be awarded to each of the 8 finalists who don't make it into the top two.

You're being asked to go online and post pictures and messages to Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #khv_southamptoncoliseum to show support.

You can find the Southampton Coliseum nomination on the Kraft Hockeyville website

According to the website, there are close to 3,200 nominations, which have now closed.
