Bicycle Tourism Promoted

Orillia | by Ken Hashizume

Orillia Council will provide $3,000 for bicycle tourism in the area.

A move is underway to bring more cycling tourism to our area.

A deputation from Cycle Simcoe was made to Orillia Council at Monday's meeting to talk about partnering with the City in helping out with the initiative.

Council passed a motion to spend $3,000.

Brendan Matheson -- Cycling Strategy Coordinator with Cycle Simcoe -- says the funding is to help cover the cost of map printing and online development.

He says it is to make sure things are consistent so that the cyclist will have the same riding experience no matter where you bike in Simcoe County.

Matheson says he read where cycling tourism brings in millions of dollars a year in Ontario.

He says municipalities in Simcoe County have a great opportunity to take advantage of that.

Matheson says something as simple as signage on trails can help boost cycling tourism.

He recalls a time when he was biking from Barrie and got lost in Orillia trying to get to the Uhthoff Trail.
