Diemert, Ross Top Athletes

Walkerton | by Bayshore News Staff

Saugeen Track and Field Club hands out annual awards to athletes.

The Saugeen Track and Field Club held it’s 32nd annual Awards Presentation on Wednesday August 27, 2014 at the Walkerton Legion. Good food, great friends, and supportive families created a great atmosphere for celebrating our athletes’ achievements.

The awards reception is a time for the club to recognize and thank the many sponsors and people who made these achievements possible. The Saugeen Track and Field Club has been very fortunate in being able to secure sponsorship from many community organizations and private corporations over the years. At the Awards Celebration sponsors had the chance to meet the athletes that they have been so fundamental in supporting.

2014 saw 14 age class records and two club records broken, some of which have stood since the club's inception. Also highlighting the year was Tony Elliott’s (Walkerton) selection to represent Team Ontario at the Legion National Midget Track and Field Championships in Langley, BC and our Paralympic athletes Rick Carr and Josh Farrell earning Gold at the National Championships in Moncton, NB. Rick Carr captured Gold in F11 High Jump and Long Jump, and Josh captured Gold in the F20 Shot Put, setting the Canadian record.

Ellen Diemert and R J Ross were named Saugeen Track and Field’s female and male athletes of the year. Ellen has been competing well at Rice University in Houston, Texas (where she has a full scholarship) and R J Ross had fantastic triathlon results.

Alex Morrow has earned herself a full scholarship to Western Kentucky University and will continue to compete in the multi-events (pentathlon and heptathlon).

Athlete’s range from those members of the seasonal junior programs to those who have represented Canada at International meets, including the World Championships and the Olympics. The club has consistently placed athletes on National teams since its inception in 1982.

The club closes the books on the year 2014 while in the never-ending process of preparing for yet another year on the track and in the field. For anyone who wishes to receive information regarding the Saugeen Track and Field Club, feel free to contact Earl Farrell at <[email protected]
