Aspiring competitor Andrew Avis of Goderich is still new to cross-country skiing -- and is developing his technique in some of the continent's most famous venues for the sport.
Avis is among nine skiers from across the country selected to attend the Callaghan Valley National Development Centre in Whistler BC.
In an e-mail to supporters this week Avis says he has worked intensely with trainers and coaches in the three months since his arrival.
He admits that when he first started there one of his coaches jokingly wondered if he had had any previous skiing experience -- but with constant work he has improved.
Avis says a highlight of his training so far was a month-long stint in Park Valley, Utah.
While there he skied the Soldier Hollow course -- the site of the cross-country ski venue at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
He says he got involved in cross-country after spending time at the Highland Trailblazers Club in Duntroon.
