Search for Missing Hikers Ends

Tobermory | by Kevin Bernard

15 teens from Waterloo area wandered off last night, found safe and sound today

That group of 15 teenagers who went missing near Tobermory, has been found.

The 16 and 17 year olds were part of an Algonquin hiking experience from Saint David Catholic Secondary School in Waterloo.

They became separated from the main group around 5 PM on Thursday.

Bruce Peninsula OPP and the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) spent much of the night searching the area of the Bruce Peninsula National Park.

Just after 5:30 AM on Friday, the group was found near a cabin on the Bruce Trail, and they are okay, but cold.

They were returned to their fellow hikers by ERT members.

The OPP would remind all users of the Bruce Peninsula that the area is very rugged and is one of the last wilderness areas in Southern Ontario.

This can present challenges to even the most experienced users.

Cell phone coverage can be very limited and once the sun has set vision is next to zero.
