A marathon runner is the 2012 Orillia Athlete of the Year.
Lisa Avery was the recipient beating out three other nominees in what was the first all-female field in the history of the award.
The presentation took place Monday night at the start of the Orillia Council meeting.
The married mother of three says she began her athletic career at the Picton marathon a few years ago where she won the race.
She says it is because of the successes in small events that she realized that she could do other marathons like in Boston and Hamilton -- where she is expected to compete in the Around the Bay 30K Road Race in March.
High school wrestlers Robin Lee and Nicole Roach, and multi-sport varsity athlete Katelyn Ayers were the other nominees.
Avery says the three are really talented athletes.
She says it would have been nice to have a Junior Athlete of the Year award for those who are in high school, college, or university.
Avery says it is a big honour to be recognized with other notable Orillia athletes like Brian Orser, Dave Town, and Ethan Moreau.
She says she is in a pretty lofty company.
