Learning About Nuclear Waste

Walkerton | by Robyn Garvey

Opponents of DGR will host information meeting about nuclear waste burial.

The public is invited to attend a workshop regarding the proposal to bury nuclear waste in Bruce County.

It's being held at 7 PM on Thursday at Walkerton District Community School.

Brockton Councillor Chris Peabody urges the public to attend tonight's presentation entitled 'Deep Trouble: Nuclear Waste Burial in the Great Lakes Basin.'

The presentation will feature two guest speakers -- John Jackson, the head of Great Lakes United and Brennain Lloyd (female) an engineer from Northern Ontario.

Peabody is strongly against the plan to bury high level nuclear waste in Huron and Bruce Counties -- and he encourages residents to get informed.

Peabody feels many communities have been lured into this process with the promise of jobs and big cash payments from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization.

But Peabody feels there are too many risks for hosting a deep geological repository.

He wants residents to get serious and pay attention since many six local communities have moved into phase three of the process.

Tonight's meeting is being hosted by Huron-Grey-Bruce Citizens Committee on Nuclear Waste.
