Sailors Improve on Power Play

Goderich | by Peter Jackson

Goderich scores 5 goals but still loses 12-5 to Hanover.

Defenceman Ben Gowing scored a goal and added two assists for Goderich in a 12-5 Western Junior C Hockey League loss to Hanover at MRC.

Cody McIntyre and Chace Duckworth each added a goal and an assist for the Sailors on Saturday night while Carlos Rivero and Jesse McIntyre also scored once each.

Sean Halley and Shawn McColl added assists for Goderich.

The story of the night was Hanover's Alex Kuntz who led his club with six goals including a natural hat-trick in the second period.

Denver Hill had two goals for the Barons -- Robbie Moe, Denver Hill, Brad Pitt and Tanner Bastien rounded out the Hanover scoring which included six power play goals.

The Sailors bucked the trend of recent games by having a weak first period in which they were outscored 4-1 and managed just five shots on the Hanover net.

In many games so far this season the first 20 minutes have been the Sailors' best.

Special teams were a bright spot for the Sailors as they entered the game with only six power play goals in 15 games but added three goals with the extra man last night.

Head Coach Brad Burton praised the power play unit saying they played an up-tempo game all night.

He recognizes that his club's offensive weakness and mistakes around their own net need to be corrected in a hurry -- this was the fourth game in a row in which opposing teams scored in double-figures on Goderich.

The loss drops the Sailors' record to 0-15-and-1 while the Barons have sole possession of fifth-place with 16 points, one point up on Mount Forest and two behind Wingham.

The Sailors and Hanover complete their home-and-home set in Hanover Friday night.

In Saturday night's only other Western Junior C game -- Aaron Armstrong and Derek Elliott each scored three goals, Cole Pellett had a pair and Nic Carter scored once as Wingham crushed Mount Forest 9-3.
