Petition circulating in Arran Elderslie calling for an at-large voting system
(Arran Elderslie) -
A petition is circulating in Arran Elderslie calling on the municipal government to change the way it's elected.
Mayor Paul Eagleson says he understands there is a fair number of names on the document calling for an at-large voting system, rather than the existing ward set-up.
Eagleson admits he hasn't heard much support for the ward system to this point.
However, he says many councillors are wondering why they should change since the system is working.
Eagleson says he hasn't made up his mind but is open to hear the ideas of an at-large system.
He says council will have the issue before them at their regular council meeting on November 26th but he's not so sure any final decision will be made then.
Eagleson says he'd like to see a public meeting held where speakers on both sides can give the pros and cons on the two voting systems.
Currently the municipality has one elected councillor from each of the five wards--Arran; Elderslie; Tara; Paisley and Chesley.
In addition the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are elected at large.
You have until Monday, November 19th to hand in any written comments on any changes to the electoral process in Arran Elderslie.
