Jim Flaherty and Christine Elliott will speak at dinner for MP Larry Miller, MPP Bill Walker

(Owen Sound) -

A fundraising dinner is being held Friday night in Owen Sound with one of the powerful ministers in the Stephen Harper cabinet.

Fresh off unveiling a second Omnibus budget bill, Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is the guest speaker.

The budget bill from the Harper government makes changes to everything from the Indian Act and the Canadian Labour Code to the Canada Shipping Act.

Flaherty insists however there are no surprises in the massive bill and says the opposition was too lazy to do its research.

Critics say the devil is always in the details -- and at 446 pages, the omnibus legislation includes a lot of details.

On Friday, M-P's agreed to split off the pension issue from the government's giant omnibus budget bill and then immediately voted to pass it.

The changes sharply increase the contributions M-Ps must make to their pensions and will require them to wait until they are 65 to collect.

Under the old system, M-P's could start collecting a pension at age 55.

Flaherty -- the M-P for Whitby-Oshawa -- and his wife, MPP Christine Elliott, will be at the Tory fundraiser for MP Larry Miller and Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker.

Elliott will also speak at Friday's dinner.

It is being held at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound beginning at 6 PM.
