Kincardine is in a holding pattern when it comes to its fight against phragmites.

Councillors were hopeful that they could solicit the help of the Saugeen Conservation Authority to help fight the invasive reed from Baie du D'Or, north along the lakeshore.

Director of Parks and Recreation Karen Kieffer says the Authority doesn't need permission from the province regarding spraying in the phragmites-affected area and it could speed things up.

However the municipality has learned the Authority has decided it can't do it because it's not their mandate.

Kieffer says that leaves them waiting on the Ministry of Natural Resources for the letter of opinion on the issue.

She says if that letter is positive, licensed sprayer Robert LeTourneau is ready to go to work in October spending 20 thousand dollars to eliminate as much of the reed as it can.

That letter is expected sometime this month.

Meanwhile, in a separate issue, council has gone on record as supporting the Lake Huron Guardian Community Fund application of the Inverhuron and District Ratepayers Association for funds to be used towards its fight against phragmites.
