A Barrie man is now 1.7 million dollars richer.

54-year-old Roger Berube played the MegaBucks slot machine at Casino Rama on Sunday morning and won the jackpot.

Media Relations Manager Jenna Hunter says Berube was initially quite shocked that he had won.

She says he has been trying to win on the MegaBucks slot machine for years and felt it was impossible to win on it.

Hunter says Berube called his wife soon after he had won the jackpot.

She says his wife did not believe it at first but a staff member went on the phone with Berube to confirm his win.

Hunter says Berube's mother lives in Quebec and has recently fallen ill.

She says the money answered the family's prayers and he can now go home and take care of his mother with no worries.

There have been a total of 8 winners of the MegaBucks slot machines.

The largest jackpot handed out was 9 million dollars to a Toronto woman back in 2008.
