Indoor Horse Riding Arena destroyed by, solar panels under investigation for cause.
(West Grey) - There's been a nearly million dollar fire near Durham. A two and a half year old indoor horse riding arena has been destroyed by fire. West Grey Fire Chief Phil Schwartz tells Bayshore Broadcasting News they were called by passing motorists around 2:20 PM on Tuesday to a farm on Concession 2 of West Garafraxa Road -- at the corner of Sideroad 15 near the Rocky Saugeen River. Schwartz says by the time crews arrived, the arena was destroyed. Fortunately, no one was hurt -- but damage has been pegged somewhere between 700 thousand and a million dollars. There is a question of whether a half million dollars worth of solar panels on the roof of the arena helped cause the fire. Property Owner Susan Dahl says there were 432 solar panel covering seven thousand square feet mounted to the roof. She notes the final panels were mounted just two and a half weeks ago. Dahl says she is still in shock about the destruction. The Fire Marshall's office has been called in to help investigate the cause of the blaze. Schwartz says this investigation will explore whether or not the solar panels could be responsible for the blaze. No one was home at the time of the fire and there were no animals in the facility at the time of the blaze. Firefighters did manage to ensure the fire did not spread to a nearby barn and house. Dahl says she is very grateful to the firefighters for all their efforts. Friends and neighbours are lending their support to Dahl as she deals with her loss. Dahl runs an equestrian training facility and the indoor riding facility served as an important structure for her business.
