Peer Review for DGR

Bruce County | by John Divinski

Bruce County awaits final report on peer review for DGR in Kincardine.

A peer review about the Deep Geological Repository in Kincardine is expected to come to Bruce County Council on Thursday.

The report by consultants is looking into technical information provided by Ontario Power Generation for its project to hold low and intermediate nuclear waste.

This DGR is different than another project being considered in Saugeen Shores, Brockton and Huron Kinloss.

Bruce County Director of Planning Chris LaForest says a draft report has been done and discussed with OPG.

But he notes the next phase is a more formalized report.

LaForest says some issues can be solved simply by getting more information while other areas may need more work.

LaForest tells us so far -- there are no red flags being raised and the process has been positive.

The Joint Review Panel for OPG's proposed project is into a 6-month comment period.

The municipality of Kincardine has already conducted its peer review study and generally is pleased with the plan.

But town officials wanted more information on some issues.
