Rally for Horse RacingWednesday, August 29, 2012 12:23 PMby
Buses from across Ontario will send harness racing supporters to Queen's Park for rally.
(Regional) -
The bus is expected to join a large number of supporters for an Ontario Harness Horsemen's rally spearheaded by Nepean-Carleton Conservative MPP Lisa MacLeod. MacLeod -- whose riding includes the Rideau-Carleton Raceway -- is mystified by a proposed government plan that would cease the " Slots at Racetracks " Program. The Conservative MPP admits she's baffled by the logic -- or lack of logic -- that would see the government eliminate a thousand jobs in her riding for the sake of potentially 500 jobs at a proposed Ottawa casino. As part of the rally, MacLeod will introduce a private members bill to bring in the Auditor General in to review the Government's Gaming strategy. MacLeod admits her frustration level has boiled over -- and she feels the situation needs to be examined by an independent third party rather than by a hand-picked, government appointed panel. MacLeod believes the rally and call for the Auditor General's review will effect change. She anticipates the bill will receive support from all three provincial parties. The Ontario Harness Racing Industry claims 60 thousand jobs will be lost if the Slots at Racetracks program ends. Supporters of the horse racing industry from Hanover, Wingham, Clinton and Elora are all expected to attend the rally. The bus will leave Clinton Raceway on Thursday at 7:30 AM sharp, then the Wingham Arena at 8:15 AM, the Hanover Raceway backstretch at 9 AM and then finally it will leave Grand River Raceway in Elora at 10:15 AM to head for Queens Park.
