It took a bit longer than they thought it would take to get there, but the Owen Sound Quantum Properties are in the Ontario Senior B lacrosse semifinals.
Owen Sound went to Sarnia on Saturday night for Game 2 of their quarter-final series with the Beavers. The NorthStars won the game 10-9 and swept the best-of-three series in two straight games.
Travis Gibbons led the winners with two goals and five assists. Jamie Grimoldby, Jordan McMillen and Nate Sanderson also scored two goals apiece while Rob Milnes and Jeff Ivey added singles.
Scott Komer got the win in net. Owen Sound led 5-4 after one period and 8-6 after two.
Sarnia's scoring and goaltending information was unavailable.
NorthStars head coach Brandon Sanderson says he knew the Beavers were anxious to not be eliminated on Saturday night, especially on their home floor, so he's happy his players were ready for the challenge.
He also says it was an important win for his club because it was a much closer result than the 19-8 romp in Game 1 on Friday night. The struggle should set Owen Sound up nicely for the next round.
The NorthStars have earned a semifinal date against the Oakville Titans. That best-of-five series is tentatively scheduled to begin next Friday night in Oakville. It looks like Game 2 could be played next Sunday at the Bayshore.
You'll recall that Oakville earned a bye into the semifinals ahead of the NorthStars after successfully appealing a decision by the OLA to strip them of a win for allegedly using an illegal player during a game.
When the OLA reversed its original ruling and gave the win back to the Titans, it boosted them into second place in the standings, one point ahead of Owen Sound.
