Bill Would Ban Blocker Pads

Regional | by Mariane McLeod

Barrie MPP introduces private members bill to remove big foam pads from schools.

The latest in the battle over blocker pads in schools is a private members bill at Queen's Park demanding the devices be banned, province-wide.

Simcoe County's public school board allows the use of the big foam pads as a safety device for educational assistants who work with potentially violent autistic children.

Barrie MPP Rod Jackson has been spearheading a campaign to have the pads removed from schools.

He says there does not have to be a trade-off between dignity for special needs students and safety for school workers.

The school board is reviewing the use of the pads, with a decision on them in the next few weeks.

Private members bills rarely pass.
