Sign Compromise in Brockton

Brockton | by Robyn Garvey

Image Committee changes draft sign bylaw after outcry from business community.

Pressure from the business community has swayed the Brockton Image Committee to revise its recommendations to Council regarding the sign bylaw.

It has removed the heritage section of the bylaw which would require business owners to have their signs conform to certain font, scale and colour schemes.

Instead, the revised bylaw recommends merchants follow the heritage theme for downtown Walkerton -- but does not force the issue.

The proposed fees for a new sign have also been lowered from 250 to 100 dollars -- currently, there is no fee.

Merchant Michelle Lang says she can live with the changes.

She was among the many merchants who initially protested the recommendations.

Chamber President Randy Saunders says the changes were necessary because the original draft was too restrictive and would have deterred businesses from locating in Walkerton.
