A slow start to the Schmalz Cup finals for the Alliston Hornets as the Grimsby Peach Kings take a 1-0 in lead in their series.
Goaltending was the difference as the defending Ontario Junior C champs scored a 5-3 victory on Friday night in front of 774 people at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre.
Alliston outshot Grimsby 41-24.
Bryce Brochu scored twice and Rob Wormald with one helped Grimsby build a 3-0.
Alliston answered back with goals from Matt Thompson and Randy Cox to cut the lead to 3-2 after 40 minutes.
The Hornets tied it up at three on a power play goal by Zenon Byblow early in the third.
But Des Cowan's marker later in the period put the Peach Kings ahead for good, they would get an empty netter from Connor Rilett to seal the victory.
Thompson finished with a goal and an assist for the Hornets -- who now go on the road for Game 2 of this best-of-seven set on Sunday night in Grimsby.
