Mayors Hand Out Meals

Grey Bruce | by Daryl Morris

Mayors across Grey Bruce will hand out meals today to raise awareness for program.

The local Meals on Wheels volunteers are getting some high profile help today.

The mayors of each community in Grey and Bruce will be going along with volunteers from Home & Community Support Services of Grey-Bruce to deliver hot meals from Tobermory to Teeswater.

Saugeen Central Program Manager Ruth Schlacht says the Mayors for Meals Campaign is an annual event that spread to Ontario in 2009.

She says having the mayors come along helps raise awareness about senior's hunger, and the role Meals on Wheels plays in the community.

She says their volunteers are kept busy delivering meals everyday.

Over the year, about 52 thousand meals are delivered throughout Grey and Bruce.

Schlacht says restaurants in each community sign a contract to provide the hot meals, and when those aren't available, a frozen meal can be delivered.

Schlacht says the meals are mainly for seniors and the disabled who cannot or will not cook for themselves.

She adds they are always looking to recruit more volunteers to help out.
