Snow Savings in Owen Sound

Owen Sound | by Kevin Bernard

Mild November and December turns into 127 thousand dollars savings.

A mild fall and little snow in November and December, has helped Owen Sound with its' budget for 2011.

City Manager Ruth Coursey says it appears the city will end the last year about 127 thousand dollars under budget for snow removal.

Council had budgeted 1.42 million dollars last year.

Coursey says for 2012, the city has split the winter snow budget into 3 sections.

Council has budgeted 1.24 million dollars for road clearing, 138 thousand for sidewalk clearing and about 45 thousand dollars for snow removal from the downtown area.

The City Manager says they are hoping for little snow this winter, but adds it doesn't make a lot of difference.

Coursey says salaries have to be paid anyway, and equipment replaced so the major impact of a snowfall is mainly in overtime.
