PFLAG Chapter Opens in Goderich

Goderich | by Dianne Colgan

The first open house goes this evening at the Goderich Library.

A new chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays is opening in Goderich.

They're holding an open house tonight at the Goderich Library for anyone who might want more information on the organization.

Chapter Leader Jennifer Zoethout says after moving to Goderich with her partner, she heard about a hate crime incident that happened locally and realized there was no at-home resources for Huron County residents.

She says it may be hard for someone in a small town to find someone to talk to about being gay, or a family member or friend being gay.

Zoethout says PFLAG is a confidential organization that can provide help, or a shoulder to lean on for people who are struggling with their sexual identity.

She says anyone interested in keeping a lower profile can request to join the facebook group, which you can search for under PFLAG Goderich.

Zoethout says the feedback she's gotten so far has been very good, but there are some who think people may prefer to go elsewhere because the community is so close-knit.

The open house goes at the Goderich Library from 6 PM to 8 PM on Tuesday and will have sexual health nurses as well as a Minister from the North Street United Church.
