Shelter at Columbus Cente

Goderich | by Rick Stow

Goderich keeps Columbus Centre as emergency shelter.

An arrangement to use the Columbus Centre on Parsons Court in Goderich as the community's emergency shelter is likely to continue.

At its recent meeting, Mayor Deb Shewfelt called for a recorded vote on whether to compensate the Knights of Columbus five thousand dollars a year to keep the Hall on standby.

The motion passed by a margin of four votes to three.

Citing staffing costs, the Knights of Columbus had approached Council well before the August tornado requesting the compensation.

The Columbus Centre gets its back-up power from a nearby municipal generator.

During the August weather -- event officials had to clear a wedding party from the facility at they hurried the conversion to an emergency shelter.
