The YMCA has found its man for 2011.
This year's winner of the Goderich-Huron Peace Medallion is Luke Elliott, founder of the Goderich Tornado Clean-Up Hub, and the Goderich Tree Project.
YMCA General Manager Anne Marie Thomson says Elliott joins elite company, including last year's student winners whose class project tackled bullying.
Elliott was nominated for the honour by Sue Leddy, also with the Y and a nurse-practitioner with the Goderich Family Health Team.
She is convinced Elliott was the logical choice.
Leddy spoke at the presentation ceremony at the Maitland Recreation Centre on Saturday.
She says Elliott rolled up his sleeves and took the initiative rather than waiting for the phone to ring.
Medal winner Luke Elliott also spoke in tribute to the many who responded to his organizational efforts.
He says the next job is to catalogue what to do in an emergency, and share the document as a "open source" manual over the internet.
Elliott will have a plaque-bearing tree in his name, planted on the lawn of the Maitland Recreation Centre.
The award presentation is the sole effort the YMCA is organizing for Peace Week in Goderich, November 19th to 26th.
