Safety in High Schools

Regional | by Rick Stow

Avon Maitland School Board inspected recently for safety in science labs.

The death of an Ottawa student in a Science Lab has prompted the Ontario Ministry of Labour to begin secondary school safety inspections.

The Ministry's random visits check tech shops and science labs to see that they are safety-standard compliant.

Superintendent of Education Jody Baker tells us that the Avon Maitland District School Board has undergone its first such inspection-- and is addressing some minor concerns noted by inspectors.

Labour officials visited South Huron High School, Listowel District Secondary and Stratford Northwestern High.

In response to the visits, the board has struck its own inspection group which will check facilities at all high schools in its jurisdiction.

Baker stresses the AMDSB takes safety seriously and has an excellent record in this regard.

Her opinion was endorsed by one of the student trustees in attendance at the November 8th meeting.
